Buy on Coinbase

Coinbase is the largest American exchange, the only one of its size that files audited accounts with a stock-market regulator, and since 2025 a MiCA-licensed business in the European Union. It is also the easiest place in the world to overpay for a coin — by a factor of five — if you use the obvious button. Here is how it actually works, and where the money goes.

Coinbase in short

Coinbase is the biggest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States and the only major one that is a listed public company: it went to Nasdaq by direct listing in April 2021 under the ticker COIN, which brings audited accounts, quarterly filings and a board answerable to shareholders. For someone handing over money for the first time, that structural fact is worth more than any feature list.

Europeans are dealing with a different legal entity. Since 20 June 2025, Coinbase’s EU business has run through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., authorised as a crypto-asset service provider by the Luxembourg regulator (CSSF) and passported across all 27 member states under MiCA. Same app, same brand, different company, and occasionally a different product list.

The short version of everything below: open the account, verify your identity, fund it by bank transfer, and then never touch the big Buy button again.

What Coinbase actually is

Coinbase was founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam around a simple, then-unfashionable idea: that ordinary people would buy bitcoin if somebody made it as easy as buying a book. Tens of millions of verified users later, that is still the core of the business — a retail brokerage with a very polished front door.

More than one product

Behind the consumer app sit several distinct things, and knowing which one you are in determines what you pay. The Simple interface is the buy-and-sell screen most people never leave. Coinbase Advanced is a full order book with maker/taker pricing, living on the same login and the same balances. Coinbase One is a paid membership that replaces per-trade fees with a monthly subscription. Coinbase Wallet is a separate, self-custodial app where the keys are yours. And Base is Coinbase’s own Ethereum layer-2 network, which matters here mostly because it makes withdrawals cheap.

Why its listings move the market

Coinbase lists conservatively and slowly, so an announcement that an asset is coming to the platform is read as a stamp of legitimacy and a liquidity event at once — the so-called Coinbase effect. The flip side is that plenty of coins you can find elsewhere are simply not available here, and some that are elsewhere are quietly delisted.

Coinbase also co-created USDC, the second-largest dollar stablecoin, and earns a share of the income on its reserves. That is worth knowing when the app suggests you hold USDC rather than euros: the recommendation is not disinterested.

Fees: the one click that changes the bill

Coinbase quotes two very different prices for the same trade, and the platform is not especially loud about it.

The Simple route

On the standard buy screen the cost is built into the quote as a spread — historically around half a percent — plus a payment-method fee that depends on how you are funding the purchase. The proportional cost is worst on small purchases and worst of all on card purchases; buying €50 with a debit card is one of the most expensive ways to acquire cryptocurrency available to a retail investor.

The Advanced route

Coinbase Advanced charges maker/taker fees on a volume ladder based on your trailing 30-day turnover, starting well under the Simple route’s all-in cost and falling from there. Crucially it is not a separate account, not a separate signup and not a separate wallet: it is a tab in the same product, trading the same balances. There is nothing to transfer and nothing to lose.

Coinbase One

Coinbase One is a monthly subscription — the entry tier costs a few dollars — that zeroes trading fees up to a monthly volume cap, with higher tiers lifting the cap. It is straightforward arithmetic: multiply your typical monthly buying volume by the Advanced fee you would otherwise pay, and compare it with the subscription. Below a few thousand a month it rarely pays; above that it can.

The other two costs

Withdrawal fees are set by the blockchain, not by Coinbase, so the network you choose is the whole story — see getting your coins out below. Currency conversion applies if you fund in one currency and buy in another; deposit in your own currency and the problem disappears.

Fee schedules change. Before a large purchase, check the current numbers on Coinbase’s own Advanced fee page rather than trusting any third party, including this one.

The single best-value click on Coinbase. Place your orders in Coinbase Advanced rather than on the Simple buy screen. It uses the same account and the same balances — nothing to transfer, nothing to open — and it charges order-book fees instead of a retail spread. On a €1,000 purchase the saving is usually several times the cost of the trade itself, and on a monthly savings habit it compounds into real money.

Getting money in and out

SEPA transfer (EUR). The cheapest way in for a European: no Coinbase fee, credited in one to three working days, and euro-denominated only. The sending account must be in your own name — a third-party transfer will bounce or freeze the account. Some banks now settle SEPA instantly, in which case so does the deposit.

Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Instant, convenient and by far the most expensive option. Reasonable for a first €20 while you learn the interface; a bad habit for anything recurring.

ACH and wire (US). ACH is free but slow and subject to holds; a wire clears the same day for a flat fee.

PayPal. Customers in the EU and the EFTA countries — Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland — can withdraw to a PayPal account, which is a genuinely useful escape hatch when a bank is being difficult.

Getting euros back out generally means sending them to the same bank account they came from. Do a small withdrawal early, before you need it: many platforms run an extra compliance check on a first cash-out, and it is much better to discover that with €10 than with €10,000.

What you can buy

Coinbase carries a few hundred assets — far fewer than Binance, and deliberately so. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Chainlink, Litecoin, Avalanche, Polygon, Stellar Lumens, USDC and the rest of the large-capitalisation field are all there, with deep EUR, USD and GBP books. What you will not find is the long tail of micro-cap tokens; if that is what you are after, Coinbase is the wrong venue.

Staking is offered on a number of proof-of-stake assets, with Coinbase taking a cut of the rewards. Availability varies by country and has been restricted in parts of the United States, so check before you count on it.

One worked example of Coinbase’s conservatism, and why it can cost you: when EOS rebranded to Vaulta in 2025 and swapped its token one-for-one, most large exchanges converted customer balances automatically. Coinbase stated it would not do so on customers’ behalf — holders had to run the swap themselves. We covered that saga in full on our EOS page.

Security, regulation, and who you are dealing with

Coinbase holds the large majority of customer crypto in cold storage, publishes audited financial statements as a condition of its listing, and in the EU is bound by MiCA’s requirement to keep client assets segregated from its own. That is a stronger institutional position than almost any competitor can claim.

It is not a guarantee. Cryptocurrency balances are not covered by any deposit-guarantee scheme — not the FDIC, not a European national scheme, not anywhere. Fiat balances are held separately from company money, which is a different and lesser protection than insurance.

The 2025 breach, and what it teaches

In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that criminals had bribed overseas support contractors to exfiltrate customer records. Passwords, private keys and funds were not taken; names, contact details, addresses, partial identifiers and account balance snapshots were. A breach notification put the number of affected people at around 69,500. Coinbase refused the $20 million ransom and offered the same sum as a bounty instead.

The practical lesson is not that Coinbase is unsafe — it is that a list of verified crypto holders with balances attached is the perfect raw material for targeted phishing, and that list now exists. Assume any unexpected call, email or text about your Coinbase account is an attack. Coinbase will never phone you to ask you to move funds to a “safe wallet”; that specific script is the most successful crypto scam of the past two years.

What to turn on today

Two-factor authentication from an authenticator app or, better, a hardware security key — never SMS, because SIM-swap attacks target exactly this. A unique password from a password manager. The withdrawal allowlist, so funds can only leave to addresses you pre-approved. And a bookmark to the real site, used every time, because paid search results and app-store lookalikes are a live threat.

Getting your coins off Coinbase

Leaving coins on an exchange means the exchange holds the keys. For a sum you would be upset to lose, move them somewhere you control.

Coinbase Wallet is a different product from your Coinbase account: a self-custodial app where the seed phrase is generated on your device and belongs to you. Nobody at Coinbase can recover it, which is the point and also the risk — write the phrase on paper or stamp it into metal, keep it away from the device, and never type it into any website or app that asks. A hardware wallet from a reputable manufacturer is a better destination again for larger amounts.

Choose the network, not just the address. The cost of a withdrawal is set by the chain you send over, and the spread is enormous: moving USDC over Ethereum mainnet at a busy moment can cost more than a hundred times the same transfer over Base — Coinbase’s own layer-2 — or over Solana. Check that the receiving wallet supports the network before you send, then send a small test amount, wait for it to arrive, and only then move the rest.

Your first purchase, step by step

Twenty minutes of setup, plus however long your bank takes.

  1. Create the account with a dedicated email address and a password from your password manager.
  2. Turn on 2FA immediately, using an authenticator app or a hardware key. Do this before you deposit anything.
  3. Verify your identity. Passport or national ID plus a selfie; a proof of address for higher limits. Use the name exactly as printed on the document.
  4. Fund by SEPA transfer from an account in your own name. Expect one to three working days; do not panic on day two.
  5. Switch to Coinbase Advanced and place the order there. A market order for a first, modest purchase is fine; a limit order if you have a price in mind.
  6. Set up the withdrawal allowlist with your own wallet address, and make one small test withdrawal on a cheap network.
  7. Record the trade — date, asset, quantity, price, fee — and export a CSV. Under the EU’s DAC8 rules, in force since January 2026, the tax authority will be receiving its own copy.

Where Coinbase wins, and where it does not

No platform is the right answer for everybody. Here is the honest ledger.

What works

  • A listed public company with audited accounts and a regulator on each side of the Atlantic
  • A MiCA licence via Luxembourg, valid across all 27 EU member states
  • The gentlest onboarding in the industry — genuinely hard to get wrong
  • Deep EUR, USD and GBP liquidity on the large-cap assets
  • Professional-grade fees on a retail account through Coinbase Advanced
  • Base makes moving coins to self-custody cheap rather than painful

What does not

  • The default buy screen is expensive, and the platform does not go out of its way to say so
  • Customer support has a long-standing reputation for being slow and scripted
  • Compliance reviews can freeze an account with little explanation and no deadline
  • A conservative, comparatively short asset list
  • The EU entity does not always offer everything the global platform does
  • The 2025 support-contractor breach put a list of verified holders into criminal hands

Coinbase FAQ

Is Coinbase safe?

It is about as institutionally solid as a crypto exchange gets: a Nasdaq-listed public company with audited accounts, most customer crypto in cold storage, and a MiCA licence in the EU through Coinbase Luxembourg. That said, crypto balances are not covered by any deposit-guarantee scheme, and in May 2025 bribed support contractors leaked customer records — names, contact details and balance snapshots, though not passwords or keys — affecting around 69,500 people. Turn on app-based two-factor authentication and the withdrawal allowlist, and treat any unexpected contact about your account as an attack.

Why is Coinbase so expensive?

Because most people use the wrong screen. The simple Buy button builds a spread of roughly half a percent into the quote and adds a payment-method fee on top, which is punishing on small card purchases. Coinbase Advanced charges volume-tiered maker/taker fees on the same account and the same balances, and costs a fraction of that. Nothing needs to be transferred or opened to use it.

What is Coinbase Advanced, and is it a separate account?

No. Coinbase Advanced is a full order-book trading interface inside your existing Coinbase account, using the same balances and the same login. It replaced Coinbase Pro. The only thing that changes is the pricing: maker/taker fees on a 30-day volume ladder instead of a retail spread.

Is Coinbase One worth paying for?

Only above a certain volume. The subscription zeroes trading fees up to a monthly cap, so the calculation is simply your monthly buying volume multiplied by the Advanced fee you would otherwise pay, compared against the subscription price. For someone buying a few hundred euros a month it does not pay; for an active buyer it can.

Is Coinbase legal and available in the European Union?

Yes. Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. was authorised by the CSSF in June 2025 under MiCA and is passported across all 27 member states, with Luxembourg as Coinbase's European hub. EU customers contract with that entity rather than with the global platform, which occasionally means a different product list.

Can Coinbase freeze my account?

Yes, and it does — usually for a compliance review triggered by a deposit from a third party, an unusual pattern of activity, or an incomplete verification file. The best defences are boring: verify fully before you deposit, only ever fund from an account in your own name, and do not leave a balance you cannot afford to be without for a few weeks.

How do I move crypto off Coinbase cheaply?

Choose the network deliberately. Withdrawal costs are set by the blockchain, not by Coinbase, and Ethereum mainnet can cost a hundred times what the same transfer costs over Base — Coinbase's own layer-2 — or over Solana. Confirm the receiving wallet supports the network, send a small test amount first, and use the withdrawal allowlist.

What is the difference between Coinbase and Coinbase Wallet?

Your Coinbase account is custodial: Coinbase holds the keys and can recover your access. Coinbase Wallet is a separate, self-custodial app where the seed phrase is generated on your device and known only to you — nobody at Coinbase can restore it if you lose it. Use the exchange to buy, and a wallet you control to hold anything significant.
